Changes. Really! Last time.

More changes…really! This time SHOULD be the final time. For those who frequent the site you might have noticed some links, categories and posts missing. I was unhappy with the idea of not being able to accomplish a few items I really wanted to have on my site, for example my amateur radio log (courtesy of HRDLog.net).

After posting a question on WordPress.com Forums and taking the responses into consideration I went ahead and reinstalled the WordPress files on my host, IPOWER and have had very good luck in configuring it. Currently when you go to www.the6thfloor.com you are on the new, hosted site. So far it looks to be running very smooth, but it also puts me back to work on updating posts and all the other files associated with my site.

This was how I wanted my site in the first place and while pleased it make take me some more time to get the entire process completed. I am open to any suggestions readers have, please feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment and I will get back to you. So to everyone who continues to support The 6th Floor and my ranting, thank you very much.

The Sunday Update

These are posts I should not have to be writing, as a web site transition and hosting should be seamless to the end user. With that said I seem to have got my hosting issues under control for the time being. Last thing I want to do is have to change hosts or correct broken image links in some 1000+ posts I currently have in this database. But, with that said I have decided to remain with IPOWER as my host but will use a redirect my domain name, the6thfloor.com to WordPress.com where I have my “blog” currently.

I have not had good luck using the WordPress.org software that IPOWER has to install any version (or theme) for my site. I ran into issues with image hosting and redirecting the domain name, as well as an FTP to upload the 6th HamCAM to. As I my site set up now is how I intent to keep it. I can use my FTP while retaining the services that WordPress.com has.

The only problem I face now is going through all my posts and editing all the images I currently have on my FTP. While somewhat tedious, it should be done in a week or so. All the pages (Ham Radio, Antennas, 1968 Cougar, About & For Sale) have already been corrected to include the images I previously had.

The only remaining issue is that of my radio logbook that is currently hosted at HRDLog.net uses Javascript, which not allowed on WordPress.com hosted sites. So I am continuing my search and have a few possibility, but I will continue have a link pointing to HRDLog for hams who want to confirm they have made my log after a QSO.

I would love to update my web cam software and get a streaming video or updated images going on the site. I have not really explored my options there. I am just pleased to have the 6th HamCAM up and running on the site. The only way to update the image is to refresh the page. Again, not ideal but what the hell it works!

Update on Hosting

After taking a few months to manually move all posts starting in 1999 over to WordPress, I now need to go back through EVERY post in order to add the images. After some housecleaning on my host I felt it would be to my benefit to trash my previous web site design, as nice as it was and go completely with WordPress.

Unfortunately I have been going back and forth with how and where to host in order to use what WordPress.com offers and what I already have in a host at IPOWER. If I transitioned the site to run at IPOWER, I would end up losing some of the functionality I currently have as I would be considered a WordPress.ORG user and no longer a WordPress.com user. Confusing, read about the difference? Don’t feel bad you are not alone.

I have spent the better part of the last 2 hours working on updating images, nothing else. While I have yet to start going back post by post, I have got all the pages (at the top of site) functioning with their appropriate images. Not sure it’s worth my time to go back and edit each post, especially from anything related to gaming.

So look for more changes shortly, I am pleased with the support I continue to get on the site, thanks to all for taking the time to stop by and read what’s going on in my world.

Hosting Changes Coming

I believe it was 1998 when I started my first web site entitled, ‘Oswald’s 6th Floor.’ A few months later I purchased a domain name and bought space at my service provider, The Loop. It was not long after that I outgrew my provider and was fortunate enough to stumble upon an individual who offered up FREE hosting with a fancy domain name, actionquake.com. My site was then linked from www.the6thfloor.com to 6thfloor.actionquake.com. Due to circumstances beyond my control and that of my friend who helped me with hosting I was forced to go elsewhere.

I landed at Planetquake.com, part of the Gamespy Network where I was happily hosted as part of their network. What made this relationship so great was the fact my updated news would appear on Planetquake, which helped me increase my traffic and followers to my site, which at the time was still focused on game mods such as Action Quake 2 and Urban Terror.

As all relationships do, I terminated mine with Gamespy and Planetquake, but left knowing their assistance had help me to grow my site. I ended up at IPOWER a number of years back as I wanted full control of all hosting, which this company provided at a relatively good price. After retirement from online gaming The 6th Floor was somewhat dormant, as I evaluated the situation and the direction I was going to take the site. Since I had very little knowledge of PHP, which helped power the last version of my site before switching to WordPress.com, I decided to focus the site on myself.

While gaming was such a big part of my life for some 10 years, there are still some followers, but for the most part I have moved in other directions. I now post articles about fantasy football, thanks to the guys at Fantasy Football Starters, as well as my radio hobby and operating activity as part of the Northern California Contest Club. Every now and then I touch on some of the other topics (home remodeling anyone?) as they occur.Recently I attempted to move from WordPress.com, where the blog is hosted over to IPOWER, but have been unfortunate. It seems there are functions that won’t work at a hosted site that work on WordPress.com. For example posting images in the right column, which I use for the 6th HamCAM shot. While I have not explored every option, there could be a plug-in that provides that functionality.I have considered leaving IPOWER this coming July and making the move to a recommended (by WordPress.com) host and running free of the constraints and prices that WordPress.com charge. One thing about many web sites are the ever increasing amount of storage space, especially if you post images, videos and more media files. I have a hard time swallowing the price of $49.97 for 15GB of storage space. Currently Blue Host and Dreamhost are the two providers who are leading the way.

While the transition was not all that smooth making the jump to WordPress late last year, I do hope to have no down time when I change hosts in the coming months. Thankfully I will be able to get the new site on line and running before it goes live, allowing a seamless transition.

Currently I am facing more problems, as I am nearly out of space at WordPress.com. All the images I once had on this, the current version of The 6th Floor are all missing or very limited, since I have wiped the IPOWER directories clean of any files. So, while the content is still there, you might experience some issues over the next few months until I am done with the housecleaning.
