It’s Out! Finally!

I think things are slowly returning to normal. This past weekend has been outstanding. As many know Silicon Ice Development released Urban Terror Beta 2.6 yesterday. It was a very long and tiring day for those on the development team who took part in the release party festivities. Mad props go out to all of SID, especially Density who was a real trooper the last few days when it came to the code base.

If you missed Friday and Saturday, we held back to back, Urban Radio programs. Saturday’s program, the Urban Radio Pre-Release Party was out of control. You can download and listen to the shows from the Radio tab. Thanks to the guys at TsN Central we had enough bandwidth to accommodate nearly 600 listeners! Now that is support! It was an excellent time for all, as we discussed the upcoming release, new features, weapons and support features for the mod. Things such as the kick ass Urban Terror Manual. Course I am pimping it, cuz I spent a few months working on it. My contribution to Beta 2.6…hahah.

As for the mod itself, the Beta 2.6 release was very successful! The servers are increasing in numbers, gamers are at an all time high and everything…well most everything is going well. There are bugs and we are aware of many of the common issues that the community is bringing out attention. Of course they are catching things we had fixed, yet something seems to causing problems. So, SID is working on it.

As for the level designers, thanks to Dragonne has updated the def file for Urban Terror. This def file has new keys for the doors: gamemode_open and gamemode_shut. You put the game types that you want the doors locked open or locked closed in those keys I mentioned. If you are not sure what we are talking about, then load up ut_rommel in Team Survivor and CTF and you will notice the tunnel system is locked out and you cannot access it in TS. But in CTF they are open. Nice, huh?

Many mixed responses on the new levels SID released with Beta 2.6. One person will bad mouth ut_uptown and then the next person will praise the changes. It is like that for many of the updated SID levels. The same can be said of ut_riyadh, seeing as those two levels have stirred some controversy in the mod. Guess some gamers do not like change.

As for new levels, the community has responded very to the new levels. Mines by Bar-B-Q is a very popular level, many enjoy the ambiance of the level. Yet a few have had a hunkmeg issue with it. Others seem to like WU’s offer called Turnpike, as it offers fast game play and some excellent texturing.

I think by far, the most popular level was RabidCow’s Twin Lakes, version two, that SID decided to include in the distribution. RabidCow has spent months working, tweaking and improving the original level. All his hard work definitely paid off as Twin Lakes is just visually amazing. You should check out the sky box. WOW! The big trees are well, just freaking huge! The texturing is the highest quality, along with many great features. Check it out!

Newly Released Maps

There are three new maps which were released today, Bronx by AnthraX, Fortcave by [CHAOS]Homicide and Neighborhood by JFL. There were also new entries added to the Test Matrix. Air747 by P.O.W. is set on a Boeing 747 which is airborne. Golgotha by Nemesis is a dark map based on a rundown industrial city, reminds me of Kingpin. Mxmines by [tBd] NRGizer is the follow up map to mxcity, which centers around a mining facility. Screenshots for these maps can be seen here. Nakatomi by Shadowfire, Skyplay by the regulator and Slumcity by peep^, were all unavailable for download due to a DNS error.

Also, over at the Test Matrix, maps have been rearranged by date. Those with the older dates will be at the top of the list and those, newly submitted maps will be near the bottom. This in hopes of receiving more questionnaires filled out to make a determination on the map. Since Swoosh has left, Death Magnet has renamed ‘Swoosh testing’ to ‘Death Testing’. Unoriginal, sure, but it makes good sense, if the map does not pass, it dies. Simple as that.

AHL Released&Moving into the Weekend

Unless you are just crawling out of a very dark hole, then you know Action Half-Life was released yesterday at 5:30pm PDT. After an hour so, I decided to give the download a whirl. BIG mistake, I was download at just over 2k/min….which I decided was not worth the three and a half hours I would have to wait. After stopping by the Thursday night LAN festivities at Netzwerk Terror, I had the host download it a 40k using ADSL. I then began reading some of the early comments on AHL the Action Quake 2 forum, most of which were not very favorable. But as I read more comments today, most reminded us that Action Half-Life still is, after all only a beta version. So, as now, I have yet to demo the beta of AHL. That sits perfectly fine with me, since I have many other things going on, such as a few new reviews and installing my new processor. I just upgraded from a Celeron 300a to a Celeron 366, which will be overclocked to 550MHz! ROCK! With that, have a great Action weekend and watch for continuous updates this weekend.

Busy Day with Updates

It has been quite a productive day, as I have been updating, interviewing and reviewing for The 6th Floor. I followed Death Magnet’s thoughts regarding The CLQ’s top Action Quake 2 maps. Now, on the main page, there will be a list of the Top Ten Action Quake 2 Maps. This will continuously be updated to reflect any change in map ranking. This will hopefully help answer that nagging question of, “Which maps are most popular?” and “Which maps should I download?” You must remember that not all servers will be running these maps exclusively, but this should give most players a base map file on which to build.I also was able to interview two mappers today. The first interview was with Gerbil! of the Urban series. You should be able to see this interview in a few days. Since he has moved on to Half Life: Counterstrike, he is most likely not going to make any more maps for Action Quake 2. The other author, is a relative new comer to Action mapping, that being, Squirrel, who lives in Finland. His most recent submission, Loveboat should be released in coming days. if you have not checked this map out, head over the ‘Test Maps’ under ‘New Action Maps’ and download it. Looks to be a very promising map.I have also updated the ‘Action Map Reviews’ to reflect what I am currently working on. Those maps include Aggression by KaRRiLLioN =AR=, Longfall by Kristian Berg, which is still in testing, Trainer by SGT Sneaky and Asylum by Holy Goat. I should have outlast two finished by tomorrow, one which is Aggression City, the other, I am undecided as of yet.I have also added the Q2 Plugin, which is available for The 6th Floor Action Quake 2 Team Play Server. The ip address is 207.182.230.18:27910. It should be up and running on a regular basis, of course right now, I am receiving “bad address.” If you want to check the action out, give it a try. We are still working out some minor details. Expect good things come Saturday.We are into hours now, waiting in anticipation for Action Half Life. I have thought it over and I will be reviewing Action Half Life maps. It will probably take a bit of extra time to get everything up and going, so don’t expect much right away. There are 10 maps included in the download. We will see how this goes and attempt to begin reviews from there.

Up and Coming Maps

As always, there are authors designing new Action maps, here are two which look promising, just click the links for a screen shot. The first map is by krebscycle titled kreby’s krib and the other is titled “The Hunt for the HUGE Diamond,” by Squirrel. This map is still at an early stage of its development. We are almost at zero hour and the release of Action Half-Life. I noticed the update over at AHL, they have already turned 100k hits, and the mod is not even released yet. Due to curiosity sake, I will probably get a copy of it tomorrow, I still think it is going to be a majority of eye candy, some enhanced game play and the same slow Half-Life engine. I hope I am incorrect. There are some who want to know, “Am I going to run a 6th Floor review site for AHL maps?” I have not decided, I am sure there are going to be many people out there throwing sites onto the internet, similar to what we saw with the CGF and extra missions. If I do review AHL maps, they will be included on this same page and you will be able to choose in the beginning if you want AHL or AQ2. Oh, I am a bit slow but I am still working on Subway99.
