One Cool Cat

INVIS have been keeping very busy over at Section 8 Studios. His recent work can be seen in a few upcoming levels, one from SweetnutZ (you know it as the snow map) and from Servinal of 4Saken, in his level, ut_scottbase. The new model is a Thiokal Spryte 2 passenger snow cat. Check out these shots of the snow cat.


Some might have heard that cloudscapes has put aside his ut_canyon level in favor of a new design and level. “I’ve had an unwelcome surprise on how q3a seems to be handling polygons while my work on ut_canyon,” says cloudscapes. For more information on this “abandoned level, check this link. His new level is tentatively titled, ut_nightoperation. He describes the level as, “night time nature map with about 1024 units viewing distance before everything becomes completely black. Except for the many lights on the structures and in strategic positions on the map…One base is a scientific lab. The other is a chopper/parachute drop off.”

Work on ut_streets continues…slowly. As I mentioned, it will not be included in Beta 2.6. Actually, I don’t have much time right now, as we prepare for a release of the “next” beta. I will also enroll the talents of Dragonne and RabidCow to kick in their talents and knowledge when it comes to working within GtkRadiant.

I had plans of kicking out a few reviews, while I have been on vacation the past ten days. No, I was not lazy at all, but my efforts are directed in other directions at the moment (Beta 2.6) and have not had much time to update at all. But fear not, we have a few good reviews forthcoming.

I also want to say thanks to those who responded by e-mail on my latest rant, Busted Punk! Many seemed to get a kick out of it and agreed with what I had to say. Bottom line, CHEATING SUCKS! So, if you have not read it, check it out.

Sportin’ Big Wood

Them there are some BIG ASS trees. RabidCow continues on his first and only level, ut_twinlakes. While this is not a knock against him, the community really never took to this level for some reason. Snipers surely loved it, but what else is new. If the map is long and wide open, prepare to pop a few heads.

But RabidCow continues to persevere, as he continues to tweak Twin Lakes, not only visually, but technically. We will have to bring him on here to talk about some of what he has accomplished in Twin Lakes. In the meantime, you can see just how big of wood, RabidCow is sporting:

In other Urban Terror “related” news, I have been invited by the organizers of EverLAN to attend their upcoming LAN. You can read all about it, right here. The LAN takes place at the DoubleTree Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the weekend of Nov. 1-3. Should be a good time seeing Andrew (Everman, da man in charge) and Tommy from GeekWearZ.

Oh yeah and while you are buzzin’ around the Internet, check out Shaderlab. Need we explain…why!?! ydnar is the man when it comes to q3map2 for GtkRadiant. You can check out his ‘LIGHTMAPPED TERRAIN + Q3MAP2’ creation. Check it out! Some seriously good looking stuff from ydnar. But we would not expect anything less. Nice work, dude!

“She pwned me!”

“Girls! Girls! Girls! Long legs and burgundy lips!” Yet these girls are not dancing down the Sunset Strip. They are avid gamers, who have taken an interest in computer gaming. Our series rolls on today, as we check in with “the land down under.” Today’s interview comes from rustyTNT, who I had not actually planned in my Fem Fatale Series. But I received an e-mail from her, after she read Bladekiller’s interview. “I am part of an all female clan…we call ourselves Dark Angels tag, |d’angels|…it’s great to hear of other female gamers, particularly one who is involved in the development of the game itself,” says rustyTNT. I decided to offer her the questions and get her spin on gaming. You can read about rustyTNT in today’s rant.

We also bring back a favorite, at least from what many have said about the screen shots. That being from one time level designer, dotEXE. He was the author behind the level, ut_riyadh, that has made an impact on the community. Known as a “sniper’s paradise” this level is best experienced in a match playing CTF. His newest creation, is actually a remake of an earlier 1.27 level called ut_101. Except, he has changed the look, layout and the name of the level. Here is where Iceland 101 comes into play, spell ‘Rej-a-vik?’ Hahaha…the new level is now called ut_reykjavik, I can see admins going, uh, I can’t spell it, guess it won’t go into the rotation. Just kidding…

Seeing as I cannot find them online, I am going to make the Defcon.5 tree map model available. This map model is nothing new and I am sure you have seen it in levels such as Revolution, Abbey and Casa. This map model includes two sets of four models, a small model (89 polys) and a large model (105 polys). So stop using those nasty looking brushes in GtKRadiant to represent trees. New Levels from SID

Ooooh, where should we start? How about with a “confirmed” rumor that the new point release for Quake 3, 1.32 will be out next week, as reported by RogeR over on Planetquake3. Of course I have been mum on the entire cloud surrounding the point release, since I did sign an NDA with id Software and was not going to compromise anything that I knew. So, the community has been digging that news, as is SID.

As promised, we are going to show off some of the work that the level designers of Silicon Ice has been up to. Some might know the name, WU. He is a level designer, who has been around the dev team from the beginning. Actually a long time member, but his only level he really did, that still remains is called Beachhouse. Maybe some of you heard or have seen screen shots of it. It was never released, due to missing textures. WU has been hard at work on a new level we featured in our ‘Latest Action Shot’ a few days ago. The level is called ut_turnpike and is a industrial/urban type area that features an overpass. Currently it only supports TS and TDM, as he told us, but he is going to look at adding CTF spawns and flags.

We will keep tabs on the progress of this level. No decisions as to when we will see this level released for Urban Terror. Also, if you check out the action shot today, Bar-B-Q [coned] has been busy, as usually. When he is not out with the [PIT] crew coning gamers, he is actually mapping. His new level is called ut_mines and features and semi-abandoned series of mines. Interesting level, some nice work, perhaps his best to date. Yeah, I know its tough to beat Rommel…we will be feature more shots of this level soon.

Ever wanna see BIG…I am talking BIG trees? Soon you will, thanks to ydnar and RabidCow. No further information on that…yet. But the screen shots I have seen are highly impressive. RabidCow, again on the cutting edge of level design and development. Props man, Twin Lakes is going to be amazing! We will present some screenies on that level soon as well.

Now, I don’t even know why I am going here, but I have been at it again, dabbling in GtkRadiant. I am going to blame Kostas this time around. I saw his level and got the bug to go back in and see if I was “skilled.” Hahaha…let’s put it this way, I have a full layout. If this work gets past the initial stages, it will make it’s way into a CTF level. Way too early for any sort of screen shots. Of course, we have seen me do this in the past. So, right now, don’t hold your breath.

Sexiness at E3

Ah yeah, Day Two of E3 is doesn’t get better, the apex of the show. While I was not able to hang as long as I wanted to because of the real J-O-B, but I did get to check out some of the goodies, inside the box known as the Los Angeles Convention Center. Damn, my feet hurt from all this walking.

Read this on the Urban Terror Forums, which originated on the Quake3World Forums by ttimo. “GtkRadiant 1.1-TA released! Version 1.1-TA of the Quake III Arena and Quake III: Team Arena map editor is available. Want news on the upcoming point release from id Software:

Not-Newswire: “Bad news on the Quake 3 gaming front today as id software completely disappeared overnight. id staffers are now on the run for blowing all of the proceeds from their successful (but unfortunately never finished) multi player game Quake 3 in a debauched orgy of booze, loose women and pizza. Before leaving, the coders set fire to the building destroying all source code for Q3A.

“They think we’ve been working on an update,” slurred an unnamed employee, “but it’s all we could do to sober up and get a .plan out the door once a month”.

“They bought a finished product at retail” they were heard drunkenly chanting as they left.

Attempts to contact an id management spokesperson have proven unsuccessful, as apparently no-one is actually responsible for running id Software…

A spokesman for the Mac gaming community reported “They’ll resurface when they need more money. Probably pushing some new engine”.”

 

(The preceding article is of course entirely fictitious and the result of too many hours waiting for a GODAMN update to Q3. It is in no way meant to cast doubt over the integrity of the id staffers, how much they drink, how often they shag and whether or not they get the munchies, even if they do far too much of all three when they probably should be coding. It’s not mine to say. I am also in no way suggesting any pyromaniac tendencies in any id staffers – even if there seems to be a lot of fire everywhere in their games. I’m sure it’s nothing).
