Out to the Movies

We have some new updates from around the Urban Terror Community. If you missed Urban Radio last week, then you missed an interview with |NV|S, the talented level designer from our community. He checked in with an update on how progress was coming with the new version of ut_streets. If you missed the show, just go download it from the RADIO link above. He was also kind enough to give us a few more shots from the upcoming level

The “nuevo” thing to do these days instead of posting screen shots, is to create “teaser videos.” Today we are pleased to bring you two videos from levels that will make their into the mainstream very soon. The first was posted by eXKalibuR from UT Designs on the Urban Terror Forums (click link for thread). This is a 2:32 video of the work he has done on his level ut_paradise, the NEXT version. Highly recommend you download it! You can grab it from that link or here, at FilePlanet (15mb).

The next video is an exclusive here, on The 6th Floor courtesy of MasHeeN. This is an all new video of a level he is currently working on called ut_crossing. This is a level that has been under development for some time, as MasHeeN, like others await the implementation of the bomb game mode from the development team. Check this teaser out and get ready to “storm the crossing!” Download courtesy of Fileplanet (5mb). The level is still in beta mode, at least from what I was told when I viewed this teaser yesterday. Enjoy the flicks!

That is not all, MightyJoeYoung, aka Vivian is back with another rant, this time focusing on the evolution of the mod and some of the maps. for Urban Terror. So see what she has to say, click here to read Mod Evolution.

Caution: Fog Ahead

Whew….taking a bit of a breather here. Actually, its about 22:46 and I have no commitments to Urban Terror, TsN, the forums or anyone. So, what better thing to do than to update “The Floor.” Been about seven days since our last update. Since then, there has been a considerable amount of news floating around. We lead off with eXKalibuR and some updated screen shots from his updated version of ut_paradise:

While he does not have a “playable” beta ready, he does want to pass on some information. “I’m adding a new route, new stuff to make the map fit a NATO theme…and adding new climbable spots, new bridges…well, the map will be more playable,” says eXKalibuR.

I also want to thank ShminkyBoy for a new tutorial we have just added to the web site. For those level designers out there who want to be able to create a foggy environment, but not in structures, I recommend this tutorial. Shminky calls this a multi-volume fog tutorial. Check it out.

Remember Urban Radio is back on the air coming to you live on Friday. Join us this coming Friday, beginning at 1:00pm PST. I also recommend you check out TsN Central for upcoming Urban Terror matches being shoutcasted by myself, JeffT, Whizperz and Vansilli. We follow, the OGL, STA and CAL.

Coming tomorrow…a new rant titled, I Can Beta Test! Yeah, sure you can.

Where Eagles Dare!

Hey hey….Oswald here to bring you the latest and greatest from the world that is Urban Terror. As I am sure most have seen, there is still no release date from the development team. But I have it on good authority they are making excellent progress…hahaha.

Speculation continues to swirl within the community. I can tell you, the development teams wants to release it as badly as most of you want it. But we cannot do that just yet. Still some buggy code to work through. Props to Density and 27 for working their asses off on this.

Today we bring you a new review. Yeah, really another new review of a level that was released around mid-June this year. That level is Eagle by “MasHeeN”. Believe it or not Eagle was his first “official release,” but I will continue to stand behind my principal of “never release your first level.” Eagle has quickly gained in popularity through out the Urban Terror community. You can usually find Thunder, of Thunder’s Playpen having a weekend fling with Eagle, where you can play the same map all weekend long. You can read my thoughts on Eagle, right here.

We also continue our series on Female Gamers over in our Rants Section. Today we talk with Vampyress from UTZ. Many involved in the community know who she is, but now you can get a feel (no, not that type of feel) for who she is, as we are provided insight on her gaming world. Be sure to check out the previous interviews and the introduction here. Thanks to Vampy for the feel…err…I mean interview. Don’t want LOD after me. Hahah.

You “old school” terrorists will remember R.U.C.A.B. from eXKalibuR, during the early Beta 1.x days. There was a full and half RUCAB back then, but recently it has been reborn and eXKa is in the process of updating it.

He has asked that I provide him some feedback on this an internal version of the level. It has always been an interesting level, as eXKalibuR was a “mapper before his time” during the early Urban Terror. His levels were far above those from other level designers. Not sure when we will see a release of RUCAB. From the pak file I received, the level is done, but there are some issues he will need to resolve or it could run the same fate it did before when very few played it. CTF should rock on it. Watch for snipers on the rooftops!

-Update: I also added a new tutorial to the mapping tutorials section. This tutorial will walk you though your first fountain and comes to “the floor” courtesy of The Red Arrow. Check out and get all wet!

More Maps!

The community that supports Urban Terror never ceases to amaze me. There has been drastic improvements over levels created for pre-Beta 2 and those under development, post-Beta 2. Recently, more screen shots are showing up in the Level Design Forum.

Here are some new shots of an upcoming level that is still in development. The map is going to be called ut_laneway by [[TLB]]cisum. Here are some screen shots and what cisum has to say about it:

[Laneway #1] | [Laneway #2] | [Laneway #3] | [Laneway #4]
That’s a “re-imagining” of my backyard the famous Danfort Ave. I walk down this lane every day and say hmmm this would make a nice CTF map. So I made it  (I’ve taking over 250 photos so far).

It plays fast, with teams spawning on a random end of the lane. It’s 75% done. Only the one house is done the rest are still just simple clones. The cement blocks are to be replaced with roof type vent things. The sky is a temp as well until I find (or make) one with out mountains.

If I try hard I can make tris hit 10 000. And i still have to do the house’s so I have to find a few ways to optimize. This has been under development for 3 or 4 weeks. I expect to take another 2 weeks or so to finish it. Then I’ll submit it to SID for a last chance tweak. Then I’ll release.

Next up, comes some alpha shots from a very un-urban setting. The level is called ut_maya by BCU. Not many details available on this level. Here are some early screen shots of some of the fauna and rocky areas in ut_maya:

[Maya #1] | [Maya #2] | [Maya #3] | [Maya #4]
Finally, eXKalibuR released his level, ut_museum level last night. It weighs in at 9.56mb, but from the short time I spent checking it out, it really shows promise as one of the best community developed maps to date! This is NOT a beta version, but the final version. Check it out. There are also some Easter eggs and interesting effects. Nice job, eXKa!

You can also read up on the latest review here on The 6th Floor. After putting in some serious time playing ut_casa, it has been reviewed. Does this map live up the all the hype? Is it all about the texturing, but suffer from a lack of playability? Will the coinbird be coming to get you? You can find out by checking out the review of Casa by SweetnutZ.

Getting Busy

Well, too much has happened the past week. Let’s start with Urban Terror. The development team released Beta 2.1 on Tuesday and on Friday, they patched it a second time with Beta 2.2. The first patch, solved many issues the community pointed out to Silicon Ice Development. The details of the first patch can be seen here. Three days later, after a couple busy days on the Urban Terror Forums, the development team looked into the issues at hand and corrected them. The Beta 2.2 patch was released, quietly last night. You can check out the changes here. Both patches have seemed to really improve the overall quality of the mod.

Since SID has not set a release date for the map pack, the community is beginning to release different versions of upcoming community developed levels. I received e-mail from eXKalibuR this week with a URL to his upcoming level, ut_museum. If the screen shots and preliminary design were any indication, then this map will be one of the best community created maps. We have also seen a remake of a Beta 1.27 level from Kron0, his popular level, armory is now available in a beta version. He took some of the comments and did change the level around. The map features new textures and some new buildings. But it also features a few missing and misaligned textures. Overall, it looks very good and I am sure the community will rally around this level for Beta 2. Here are a few quick screen shots:

[Shot #1] | [Shot #2] | [Shot #3]

If you don’t frequent the Level Editing Forums, then you might have missed out on a few of the levels that are in development by community members. The first level is called canopy and being created by Target. It is a recreation of a forested area. Check out these screen shots:

[Shot #1] | [Shot #2] | [Shot #3]

Map information from Target, “get 90fps average, 60 on the low end.” Hopefully we will be able to bring more information from this level in the coming weeks. Nice work, Target!

Had an opportunity to talk to dotEXE this week as well, mapper behind the Beta 1.27 level, 101. He showed off a few new screen shots of his latest creation, 202, which is you had seen before, it a desert type of level. He has really improved on the terrain, from the previous screen shots I had seen. Hopefully we will see more of this level soon.

Gerbil! is still busy [I think], working on ut_pressurezone, which recreates an underwater submarine base, complete with fish and a submarine. Here is one of the latest screen shot. Still no date on the completion of this level, but it will be included in the patch.

There are some new levels that have been released. While I am dial up, I am not able to FTP them and make them available quite yet. 1.5Mbps/384kbps ADSL arrives August 2, at which time I will be back in business and able to upload and download at will. With that said, you can plan on seeing the new maps listed here in a few weeks. Hopefully, we will see final versions soon. For now, check out Urban TerroristZ for a few new third party levels.
