30 Second Beer Review: Flensburger Brauerei — Oktoberfest Festbier

The Festbier is the modern Oktoberfest style — not the dark amber Märzen that defined the festival for most of its history, but the pale golden lager that Munich’s big six breweries began serving in the Wiesn tents in the 1970s and 80s, lighter in color but not in character, designed to be consumed in enormous quantities without sacrificing the malt complexity that makes German lager worth drinking. Trader Joe’s sources this version from Flensburger Brauerei Emil Petersen — a family-owned North German brewery established in 1888 in Flensburg, right on the Danish border, whose flagship Flensburger Pilsner is one of the most respected German lagers in the country. This is not a bargain brewery producing a budget product. This is a serious German lager operation making a proper Festbier for a grocery store private label at $2 a can, which is exactly as absurd a value proposition as the field confirms.
