From Twitter to Tap List: How the 30 Second Beer Review Found Its Forever Home
The 30 Second Beer Review Is Back — and It’s Better Than Ever
After a few years away, the 30 Second Beer Review is back with a new home, a new format, and over 300 beers ready to be rediscovered.
Where It All Started
The 30 Second Beer Review was born in 2018 — a simple idea that turned into a catalog of over 300 craft beer reviews recorded on Twitter and Instagram under #30SecondBeerReview and #FPLBeerClub.
Life slowed things down for a few years, but retirement has a way of clearing the calendar. Since settling into Paso Robles and spending more than a few afternoons at California Coast Beer Company, the motivation to get back behind the camera has never been stronger.
A New Home at Contributing Factor Brewing
The 30 Second Beer Review has a new permanent home at Contributing Factor Brewing — and the 6th Floor will redirect you here going forward.
The move made sense. Contributing Factor Brewing is where the homebrewing logs live, where the SLO Beer Guide is being built, and where the Contributing Factors scoring system — the new rating system replacing the old Scooby Scale — was developed. It made no sense to keep the reviews anywhere else.
The New Review Format
The format has evolved since 2018. What started as a 30-45 second review on Twitter has grown to 45-60 seconds on Instagram, but the name 30 Second Beer Review has stuck and always will.
Each review now gets a full beer card with:
- Style, ABV, and IBU
- Tasting notes — appearance, aroma, palate, and finish
- Contributing Factors score — rated across Presentation, Character, Experience, and Return
- A 30 Second Beer Review reel on Instagram
- The Verdict — a written summary in plain English
Thirteen beers are already live in the new format — all from California Coast Beer Company and Smog City Brewing. That’s the template going forward for every new review.
The Database Rebuild
The full catalog currently holds 305 reviews dating back to 2018. That database is being rebuilt by hand — every entry gets a proper beer card, tasting notes where available, and a Contributing Factors score.
It’s a project. But the new layout is built to last and far easier to navigate than the old alphabetical link list that started it all.
The older Twitter reviews will be cataloged as stub entries — brewery, beer name, style, and a link back to the original video. Any beer that gets re-reviewed will get the full new treatment.
The Websites Got an Overhaul Too
Retirement cleared the calendar for more than just beer. Both The 6th Floor and Contributing Factor Brewing have been rebuilt from the ground up.
The 6th Floor has a cleaner, simpler look — less clutter, more focus. Contributing Factor Brewing finally has a site worthy of the name. The last time I built a website from scratch I was hand-coding HTML in 1999, so having AI assist with the backend development, database architecture, and design has been a genuine game changer. I still write every word of content — but it doesn’t hurt to have help with the technical heavy lifting.
