The Heineken Experience Amsterdam: A Craft Beer Fan’s Honest Review

The unmistakable red brick Heineken Brewery on Stadhouderskade — hard to miss.
I’ll be upfront: I’m not exactly Heineken’s biggest champion. Living in the US, surrounded by an embarrassment of craft brewery riches, the big green bottle doesn’t exactly call my name. But when in Amsterdam…
The Heineken Experience had been on our radar before we even left for the trip, though I wouldn’t have lost sleep had we missed it. Thankfully, on our last full day in the city, we made it happen — walking from Amsterdam-Noord, catching the ferry across the IJ, and making our way south to a sprawling red brick building just off Stadhouderskade.

Hundreds of green bottles lining the ceiling — sets the tone before you’ve taken ten steps inside.
We stepped inside and headed straight to the self-service kiosks to purchase tickets. Here’s where we hit our first snag: no advance reservation meant the rooftop experience was completely sold out. We pivoted to the standard tour, which still included complimentary beers. We’d survive.
My girlfriend checked her coat and bag while we queued up. Once our tickets were scanned, we filtered into a stone and brick staging area that marked the official start of the tour. About twenty minutes later our guide welcomed the group, speaking from an elevated platform. He spotted me front and center and tossed me a plastic token — good for one extra consumptie — on top of the two we’d already been issued.

Left: the original copper brew kettles. Right: Heineken’s logo evolution over the decades.
The tour walked us through the full Heineken story: the company history, how the brand made its way to the US, the ingredients, the brewing process, the bottling operation. It did slide into marketing territory toward the end — Heineken is nothing if not a global advertising machine — but given the context, it felt expected rather than grating. You know what you’re signing up for.
At the end of the tour we had the chance to buy personalized bottles. I dropped the extra euros on one for a friend who’s a proper Heineken devotee. Worth it.
“It was damn good. Maybe I was just thirsty. Maybe there’s something about drinking fresh lager a few feet from where it was brewed.”

Had to document the moment — free beer, great company, zero complaints.
Then came the beer. And here’s where I have to eat a little crow.
It was damn good.
Maybe I was just thirsty. Maybe there’s something about drinking fresh lager a few feet from where it was brewed. Either way, the flavor was noticeably cleaner and crisper than anything I’d had back home. I’m not sure I fully tracked how many I knocked back before we finally wandered out — four sounds about right.
But the real highlight came at coat check. My girlfriend struck up a conversation with the woman at the desk, and within a few minutes a young guy from the Experience staff had joined us. We chatted for a good twenty minutes — where we were from, the usual — and then, almost offhandedly, he asked if we’d done the rooftop. When I mentioned it had been sold out, he handed us drink chits, walked us to the elevator, and sent us up.

The Heineken Studio pour on the rooftop — a small-batch exclusive brewed only for the Experience.
The rooftop delivered. Beautiful open view across Amsterdam, cold beer in hand, and something I hadn’t expected: a special small-batch version of Heineken brewed exclusively for the Experience. It was excellent.
Verdict
Highly recommended. It’s a bit commercial in spots, but it’s fun, well-produced, and the beer at the end genuinely surprised me. Just do yourself a favor and book the rooftop in advance — don’t count on a lucky conversation at coat check to bail you out.
Cheers! 🍺
