Point Blank Review: Bushong Vintage Company

Bushong Vintage Company: One of the Best Boutique Wineries in Paso Robles

Paso Robles wine tasting · Downtown tasting room · Red blends · Small-production

It took me nearly two years after first hearing about Bushong Vintage Company before I finally walked through the door — and it’s one of the best wine decisions I’ve made in Paso Robles. I first heard about this downtown Paso Robles tasting room from Raymond Smith, founder of Indigene Cellars, while sitting at a tasting tucked “in the alley” next to Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ. Ray mentioned it to a couple seated nearby, and I kept filing the name away while passing it by in favor of larger, better-known wineries. What a mistake.

A quality-first philosophy in the heart of downtown

Since my first visit in June 2025, I’ve come to believe Bushong Vintage Company is among the very best Paso Robles has to offer. The tasting room sits half a block off the square at 12th and Spring Street — an easy stroll from other downtown Paso Robles tasting rooms — and it perfectly embodies what winemaker Jason says best: “We’re not focused on making more and more, but making better and better.”

Jason handles the winemaking, while Mike is the ultimate jack-of-all-trades keeping everything else running smoothly. Together, they’ve created something truly special. Walking through the door feels like stepping into someone’s living room. The wall opposite the entrance is lined floor-to-ceiling with vinyl records — and yes, they’ll spin whatever you’re in the mood to hear. The wine names and labels are all music-inspired, giving the whole experience a wonderfully cohesive personality.

The wines: Paso Robles red blends with serious depth

Bushong Vintage Company specializes in red blends, sourcing eclectic varietals from the Central Coast’s most premium vineyards. Jason’s range is anything but predictable. Each blend carries a music-inspired name that suits the creative spirit behind it.

The flagship Institutionalized — now in its fifth version — is a brooding, layered red delivering dark fruit, black cherry, vanilla, pie crust, and spice. It has been turning heads for years: an earlier incarnation earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, with the reviewer noting aromas of cassis, black plum, and violet, a rich and full palate with soft tannins framing elderberry and earth, and a finish with a drying grip of dark chocolate. That kind of critical recognition from a small boutique operation speaks volumes.

Physical Sound is a Rhône-style blend of 55% Grenache, 31% Tannat, and 14% Mourvèdre, aged 18 months in 100% French oak — a mix of once-used puncheons and new barriques that gives it both structure and finesse. The V7, a seven-varietal Paso Robles red blend, showcases how comfortable Jason is juggling complexity. There’s also a Zinfandel-Carignan (62% Zin, 38% Carignan) that leans into Paso’s bold, sun-drenched character, and a Carignan-forward blend with Tempranillo and Garnacha that nods toward the Spanish side of the Central Coast’s DNA. Even the rosé — built on Grenache, Mourvèdre, Tannat, and Syrah — reflects his red-wine sensibility.

What to expect at your tasting

With a focus on what he calls “high-fidelity wines,” Jason has dedicated over 20 years to producing exceptional small-production wines from the Central Coast. Every red blend feels like the work of someone who has truly found his calling — much like a great album you keep returning to, discovering something new with every listen.

Tastings at Bushong Vintage Company are $25 per person, waived with the purchase of two bottles. You’ll work through lighter offerings — a white and a rosé — before moving into the red blends and, if you’re lucky, a 23-year-old cream sherry. So lovely.

Should you visit Bushong Vintage Company?

Yes — without reservation. If you’re planning Paso Robles wine tasting and want to skip the crowds without sacrificing quality, Bushong Vintage Company is exactly the kind of boutique winery that makes this region special. Make a reservation with Jason or Mike, and prepare to have your expectations exceeded. Some of the best wine I’ve had in the region. Highly recommended.
