Point Blank Review: California Coast Beer Company

In a town dominated by wine, California Coast Beer Co. is a welcome outlier — and a damn good one.

I discovered California Coast Beer Company on my first trip to Paso Robles in July 2021, and I haven’t felt the need to visit another local brewery since. That says everything. As someone who takes craft beer seriously — I’ve chased cans from Tree House Brewing Company on the East Coast and been a regular at breweries from San Francisco to San Diego — I know quality when it hits my palate. Cal Coast Beer hits!

The Space

The former Tozzi Auto Body has been transformed into something genuinely special. Inside, distressed wood (some of it salvaged from the Pismo Pier), concrete, and metal create an industrial warmth. Law enforcement and military patches line the bar wall. The 10-barrel brewing system sits proudly opposite the taps. A few TVs rotate between sports and the owners’ own People, Pints & Possibilities podcast. Outside is borderline epic — a covered deck with plenty of seating that regularly hosts live local music.

The campus has grown into three distinct spaces: The Den, a 1970s-inspired lounge with vintage records, an 8-track player, and retro lighting that makes you feel like you’re raiding your grandparents’ living room in the best possible way; The Kitchen, serving elevated comfort food and wood-fired pizzas that go well beyond standard brewery fare; and Patina, an event space with a refined, relaxed feel suited for everything from birthday toasts to private gatherings.

The Beer

This is what you came for, and Cal Coast delivers. The lineup runs the full spectrum — lagers, pale ales, IPAs, Belgian wit, porters, and browns — all executed with care. As an IPA fan with an appreciation for hop character, malt balance, and clean fermentation, I’ve been consistently impressed. There’s something on tap for every palate, and crowlers and growlers let you take it home.

The beer club membership — $275 well spent — is worth it if you find yourself coming back. And you will find yourself coming back.

The Vibe

What keeps me returning isn’t just the beer. The staff brings a genuine, family-like warmth to every visit, whether you’re a weekend tourist or a familiar face. It’s the kind of place where you settle in and lose track of time — which, in Paso Robles, feels exactly right.

If you’re skipping wine for the day and want something worth your time, walk one block off 13th Street. You won’t be disappointed. #LifeIsGoodOutHere
