School Spooktacular

It’s been a great school year for my son, who is in finishing up his first year in kindergarten. Knowing how involved my parents were with school when my sister and I were growing up, my wife and I felt it necessary to be involved with my son and his school. He has a GREAT teacher, I have worked with her on Wednesday mornings for an hour in support of what she is teaching. The best part, along with being involved is I see how my son is doing compared to others in his class. So far it’s been top marks in kindergarten.

I also got involved in the PTA. I have attended all but one meeting this school year, unfortunately the PTA group at my son’s school is rather meager. Not many parents involved in with their kids, from what I have seen at the meetings. Last October I helped with the haunted house for their Halloween carnival. Unfortunately the couple who have run the haunted house for the last 5 years are seeing their daughter move to junior high and now the PTA needs someone to take over the responsibility. All eyes of the PTA board turned to me, since I have been the only father attending meetings.

While I haven’t agreed to assuming this responsibility, I have bounced the idea off a friend of mine who is a big Halloween guy and has many props and ideas when it comes to organizing and laying out a haunted house. I have now started looking for layouts and ideas that would be comparable to what was organized last year. Unfortunately the budget won’t be unlimited and many of the props would need to purchased or constructed. The school does have a small cache of Halloween props to use.

I am in search of a workable layout that would fit on a gymnasium stage, as well as some room ideas (graveyard, haunted forest, etc). I will probably make a decision on assuming this responsibility for the next 5 years. I have been scouring the HalloweenForum.com website for ideas. It’s rather impressive to see some of the ideas on this website that are cheap and just take time to build. Thankfully I have a great resource in my buddy in Los Angeles, as well as a co-worker who provided me with some great ideas that are easy on the budget.
