Oswald Rant: F*ck the CPL
By no means do I follow “professional gaming.” Nor do I really have any interest in qualifying for an event any time soon. But after reading, Aftermath: Fallout with Angel Munoz… I must say, there are some comments that seem a bit asinine and out of place.
First, “We in fact believe that the Quake community also owes us a debt of gratitude for what we have done for them over the past 4 years. It is time to expand the league and we do it without regrets or second thoughts.” I take this to mean that within The CPL, id Software and their highly touted Quake series would not be where they are today without these events. Why does the Quake Community owe a damn thing to The CPL? They don’t. Just because id had a successful run in their “professional league” with Quake? I don’t buy it. Bottom line. IT’S ALL ABOUT MONEY!!! Really shows you where those so-called “loyalites” lie.
The next comment seems to tie the entire interview together a bit, “Do we really need to justify our decisions? Justification is done mostly when you do something wrong. While I fail to see the connection, I will answer your question this way: The CPL is a company interested in the expansion of competitive computer gaming worldwide, not in the promotion of a particular game. For many years the biggest criticism we had received was that CPL should change their name to QPL or Quake Professional League, and the biggest complaint we received from most of the top pro-gamers was how boring it was for them to play Quake III. We now have made a decision that addresses larger audiences, moves the sport in a different direction and expands the reach of our league.” So they claim to be “interested in the expansion of competitive computing…” Since Quake III is not as popular they decided to go in another direction, with a game…er…mod that is two years old and an engine that is bordering on out of date. I fail to see the justification of moving forward. Then again, it is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!
“Boring.” That is how Quake III is being described by those “pro-gamers” who of course are not playing for enjoyment and entertainment, but MONEY. Since Counter-Strike overwhelms another game or mod to date, The CPL saw more of an opportunity to make money. Sorry if I sound ignorant, but unlike Quake III, CS suffers some flaws. Quake III is more than a game, it is the most powerful gaming engine, created by the best group of gaming developers around, id Software.
What the hell is Oswald trying to say? I am trying to say, The CPL did NOT make id Software. Without id Software there would be no Quake, Quake 2 or Quake III, which equates into no mods, let alone Counter-Strike. So Angel and the CPL, suck it up, tell id its ALL ABOUT THE MONEY go run to Counter-Strike like so many other “gamers” and enjoy the remainder of the ride. Because in the not to distance future, CS will become more dated, or should I say outdated. When it does, who will you turn to? That’s right. Successful, reliable id Software.
