02-12-01: Worn & Torn by Mike “Jerkoff” Daugherty

I am sure there are many Quake 2 levels that never got the attention they deserved when Quake 2 was the game of choice. This week we focus of review on a level called Worn & Torn created by Mike “Jerkoff” Daugherty. While the level is quite dated, June 8, 1998, it remains a very original idea with some interesting features. The level is larger than some previous levels I have reviewed, but game play does not seem to be a problem. Time to get “torn up!”

Essentially, Worn & Torn is separated into three distinct areas, an inner connected structure with well developed canyon walls rising towards the sky. At first glance the level looks ominous, considering the size of the walls which surround the multi-level man-made facility. There are many different approaches you can take when the level begins. A level of this size, weapons are at a premium, if you are fortunate enough to spawn near one grab it and search out your fragbait. All the weapons are included, even the BFG, which can prove dangerous in some of the low canyon areas if you are not careful.

The structure itself is built with vertical game play in mind. Two separate areas are similar in design, built with three levels on each side, connected by a narrow corridors on each level. Game play is never calm in and around these areas as multiple entrances keep the game flow moving. One side of the inner structure is submerged in a mucky, green water, which also winding around and leads to small lake on the floor of the canyon. The BFG makes its home, resting on a small outcropping inside the structure just above the water line.

One side has a tall, enclosed platform which moves between the ground level and the top level. Once the ride is over, you exit in a brightly lit, elevated room ,with a railgun resting on a glowing pedestal. Just a quick run through the narrow corridor and you find a rocket launcher and some grenades, along with access to a cliff which descends to the lower depths of the canyon.

Game play was rather furious with 10 players, and weapons were a commodity which became difficult to come by. The railgun was the weapon of choice do to the long, lines of sight from the windows and entryways of the facility to the lower floors of the canyon. Much of the action was spread though out the entire level, which gamers usually entering into violent and bloody fragfests at the bottom of the canyon, where there BFG became a highly effective killing machine.Worn & Torn does not promote camping as an effective technique on this level, but be ready to ride some long railgun shots. Now go “tear it up!”
