03-05-01: Omega Frag by Warren “=WWIII=” Williams
I must say it has been a thrill keeping the blood life of Quake II pumping by reviewing, what I hope you think are good, all around death match levels. Each week it seems to get more difficult to find fresh and innovative levels. Thanks to a link I clicked on I was able to bring myself up to speed on some of the newer levels released. This week I have “picked a winner!” The level is called Omega Frag which was created by Warren “=WWIII=” Williams of The Fresh Team. It’s time to pay homage the only way you know how. In frags!
Do you want a crash course in action packed death match? Then Omega Frag is the map that is “all about fast and furious Arena DM”. This level in its design, as it is split into two very distinct areas. The lower levels resemble DM as you know it. The corridors wind though the inner workings of “the Arena’s power center and ventilation system. The entire facility is self-sufficient tapping it’s energy from geo-thermal hot spots in the area. [courtesy of the readme.txt].” There are multiple ventilation shafts and lifts which provide access topside, into the Rocket Jump Arena.
For the death match “purists” they may choose a pattern through out the lower levels, unfortunately weapons and ammunition are slim. The more powerful weapons are located in the arena above the surface. Action down here usually begins very quickly, but subsides as gamers make there way to the surface. =WW3= did include a unique feature he calls, “The Gauntlet.” =WWIII= says, “This tunnel is filled with health, so you’ll want to utilize it when you are low on health and being chased. The beauty of it is this, you cannot be followed through The Gauntlet! Anyone attempting to follow you will be squashed.”
For those “1337” in the realm of rocket jumping, this arena was constructed entirely for you. This octagonal, open air arena features five rocket jumping platforms which Warren says, “make the air route, often the best route.” Wouldn’t expect anything less from these skilled Quakers. Rising from the center of the “octagon” is a tall, clear platform which holds the quad damage and some ammunition for the rocket launcher. Weapon placement begins with the rocket launch which rests beneath this platform. There are also two smaller octagon tubes positioned on both sides of the platform. Compare them to and entrance and an exit tube. One launches you up from the lower level into the arena. If you are prepared, you can land on the raised platform and equip yourself with the quad damage. The other tube drops you into back into the catacombs of this large scale level. Very resourceful layout, which keeps the action moving flawlessly through the entire map.
The only drawback to testing this level, was the lack of efficient…..er, any rocket jumping by the bots. I was able to completely own the octagon arena, of course your results may vary. This level is sure to catch the attention of all the hard core Quake II junkies who are always looking to score their next hit. Props to Warren “=WWIII=” Williams I look forward to playing some of his other levels.
