Stingy Mod Developers

If you get an opportunity, check out the latest Rants& Raves on our host, PlanetQuake. The rant it titled, “Mod Authors: Why do they have to be so stingy?” and centers around developers who are over protective with their code. As always I did feel the need to offer up a developers opinion, thanks to dokta8 for lending me some material on which to build.

Been receiving more feedback on the last few rants I have composed. Today I was contacted by a member of the Action Quake 2 community, whom I respect for the work he has done. Let’s call him Mr. X. for the hell of it. His comments center around my opinion as it pertains to the upcoming release of Reaction Quake 3 and my misinformation and reporting of this realism mod.

Whatever works for you. You have to understand that RQ3 IS supposed to be EXACTLY AQ2 ported to Q3A. And in the interest of time, porting old established maps is faster than generating new ones from the mapping newbies who cared to help. Also, it helps to test out the game physics (strafe jumping) on maps that people know how to get around on.

Your rant seemed to take a large amount of offense at the people porting calling themselves “level designers”, but that’s a term you coined up, not them. NONE of them consider themselves more than just map porters. Many of them will go on to make original maps, another point you didn’t address at all. It’s simply more efficient, time-wise, to work with pre-existing maps. 🙂

If you’ve been watching the forum, then why’d you write the rant? The rant seems to be based off of misinformation and/or lack of information. If you were reading most of the posts, you’d know about the original mappers and the intent of RQ3. As you said in your rant many times, UT is NOT trying to be AQ2. But RQ3 IS, so it’s not a good comparison.

Thanks to Mr. X. for bring some of those points to mind. I liked his term, “map porters”…heheh brought out a small chuckle. As usual I am quite open to criticism and comments from the community. I did find his final thought interesting, “Well, hey, I don’t know jack about UT, so I’m just coming at this from the RQ3 perspective. From UT, all I heard was it was hyped, it had bugs, people started to flame it because they thought it wasn’t enough like AQ2, and now I don’t hear about it anymore.”

Ah yes was able to spend about three hours actually enjoying Urban Terror last evening and getting further feedback from the community as to what they would like to see in Beta 2.

I was supposed to bring you a new review of the map Armory, by dU krOno, but that will come later today. I got caught up in a Win2k install with a few networking problems. Hope to have the new Urban Terror server up shortly.
