Rumors from The Floor
As I mentioned in the Urban Terror Forums today, I went in search of those vicious Urban Terror rumors which make you go uNF, uNF. First up on the list, GottaBeKD, who is currently working on the NPC code for Urban Terror. Here is a few snipets from Gotta, “Well the NPC system I created in the old code base allows mappers to spawn a bot. and you give your bot a name. and then you can spawn a waypoint object. and you give it the same name as the bot. That is how you map a particular way point to a bot. You also give a number value to the way point, to express order in the patrol…then there are global bot variables: Aggression, which defines if he runs away or if he attacks, or if he never deviates from his way points. Sensory, which decides what causes him to deviate from a way point, 0 if it takes the ut_objective command to make him respond, 1 if he responds to all players in sight, and 2 if he responds to hearing shots fired, or players in sight.”
While Gotta did go into some design details and aspects, I agreed not to publish what was shared, as some had not been finalized by the development team for Beta 2. The bots will be a bit different than how you know them now. Urban Terror is pushing towards team play and not solo play. The bots which are currently implemented are good for one thing and one thing only. Target practice. Gotta said he is, “much more interested in NPC support, single player bot support, story element bots, hostages, civilians and animals. and multi-player co-op against bots.” This is something which we did discuss at QuakeCon 2000. So stay tuned for further information and news on the next Urban Terror bots.
Next up, I have been pushing WetWired to give me some new screeshots from his upcoming Urban Terror map. While the map is yet unnamed, the setting takes place in Venice, Italy. For a look at the only screenshot in existance, give a firm click. Of course WetWired did say, as soon as he had more shots that are not “dodgy.” We will have them first for you. Until then, drool over one screen shot.
Friday marks the first Oswald Rant for 2001. What better topic to choose than a response to an article which was written by Merlin entitled, Is Counter-Strike Killing the Mod Community?. I am still trying to decide if I agree with his take or oppose it. What the hell, I figured it always feels good to rant about Counter-Strike. And yes, I have played it, and while it is a solid mod, I am more used to the faster playing games and mods such as Unreal Tournament and Quake III. But, I did give it a change and occasionally play it at the Netzwerk Terror LAN. So check out, Blinded by Counter-Strike.
Check this Link of the Day out. “A series of drawings from an isometric perspective, in the style of a computer game [The Sims]. The subject of each drawing is the image, or images, that created a popular cultural event. Historical events (like the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Motel) are used interchangeably with fictionalized events (like the picnic scene from The Sound of Music).” Isometric Screenshots. Look at the the second row, third picture from the left. That’s Oswald getting assassinated by Jack Ruby, courtesy of the Dallas Police Department and the U.S. Government.
