01-01-01: Millennium by Skip “DeFrag” Downey
While attempting to be creative, and offer up to the community a never seen before map to start the new year off fresh, I decided upon a map which I feel is more fitting based on a single prerequisite. The name of the map. Considering today is the first day of the third millennium, what better map to review than Millennium by Skip “DeFrag” Downey. While this map has been around December, 1999, it is an excellent example of what fine deathmatch map, like a fine New Years champagne need to be, to ring in the new year with a frag! So leave behind the glitter and music of last night’s party and take my hand and experience the new year. Experience, Millennium.
Built in a symmetrical manner, the level is designed with a small central chamber which has a heavy shielded bunker built into one side. Gaining and maintaining a tactical advantage can be obtain by using the jump pad at the base of this bunker. Once on top of the bunker, a corridor loops around both sides of the bunker and back into the main chamber. Directly across from the bunker, resting on a ledge is the mega health, which will take those precision rocket jumping skills to obtain.
The other side of the map is marked by a high ceiling lava cave, which can offer the skilled play with an advantage. Resting on top the high plateau the quad damage and the red body armor. Any sort of miscalucation in judgment of your rocket jump will cause you to bathe in the molten lava which surrounds the plateau. This is also the only area which will provide access into the bunker, which rewards you with a grenade launcher and maybe a few shots before you presence is detected by the furious action taking place on the opposite side of the bunker walls.
The railgun has be situation in a beautiful position. Sitting at the apex of a curved bridge, surrounded by armor shards. The narrow corridor is very unforgiving and does not provide much cover when confronted by the enemy. If you were fortunate enough to reach the railgun, you could be offering the opposition a ride on your rail before they knew what hit them.
Gameplay in Millennium is extremely fast paced. Most off the action takes place outside the bunker, in front of the rocket launcher. Built with 1 v 1 in mind of a small group of 4, the map leave little room to run and hide. It will keep you on your toes, as the weapon and item placement is well distributed around all areas of the level. Many which reward the player nicely, but can often be challenging to obtain. Unlike many Quake 2 level, there is a “minimal vertical element within, but it sure plays great,” says DeFrag. So ring in the new year with a touch of old school. Download Millennium!
